Summary As an Engineer II – Fire Mitigation , you’ll help APS improve the safety and reliability of its electric grid by evaluating equipment, analyzing system protection strategies, and recommending engineering solutions that reduce operational and wildfire risk. This role plays a key part in ensuring APS can safely deliver power to Arizona communities while implementing industry-leading practices and technologies that strengthen grid resilience.
What Your Day Would Be Like Benchmark fire mitigation and protection technologies as well as other utilities to identify best practices and innovative solutions that can be applied at APS. Evaluate distribution feeders and develop engineering recommendations for equipment upgrades that improve system safety and reliability. Perform protection studies to assess how changes to critical infrastructure impact fire mitigation strategies and customer reliability.
Collaborate with field operations, engineering teams, and stakeholders to develop practical solutions before equipment is deployed in the field. Support strategic decisions on distribution system investments that balance wildfire risk reduction, operational performance, and customer impact. Who We’re Looking For Strong knowledge of electric distribution systems, including relaying, reclosers, fuses, and protection coordination principles.
Experience performing protection studies, analyzing TCC curves, and evaluating system performance to support sound engineering decisions. An analytical problem solver who can assess complex technical challenges, apply risk-based decision-making, and translate findings into practical recommendations. Someone who enjoys collaborating across teams, providing technical guidance and leadership as needed, and learning from industry best practices to drive continuous improvement.
A safety-focused engineer who balances reliability and customer impact when developing solutions. Knowledge of engineering standards, codes, safety requirements, and industry best practices relevant to the role. This position may be subject to shift work and overnight travel. Minimum Requirements A four-year Bachelors degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA).
Engineering degree must be from an accredited College of Engineering Program. (A four-year Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered directly equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. Equivalency may be considered based on a review of the degree program curriculum, subject to approval by Engineering department management.)
Plus two (2) years experience in Engineering-related positions. A relevant Masters degree in Engineering may substitute for one (1) year of required experience. Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications: Problem analysis/resolution techniques. Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, practices, methods and safety standards in the area of applicable engineering discipline.
Major Accountabilities 1) Analyzes and prepares a variety of data, technical reviews and evaluations, trend analyses, short to long-range technology assessments, products and services, investigations, product/specification verifications to aid decision making for distribution protection strategies that reduce the overall fire risk throughout the state. May present findings to a diverse group of internal staff and management.
2) Remains cognizant of current technology and engineering developments as well as fire mitigation industry trends and competitive developments through involvement with research institutes (EPRI, etc.), industry peer groups, and regulatory bodies. Maintains high individual level of engineering technical capabilities and expertise by formal education, self-study, and awareness of technology advances.
3) May provide technical guidance and leadership to less experienced engineers both internal and external to the fire mitigation team. Provides some direction for programs executed by field teams. 4) Identifies, communicates and advocates resolution of technical concerns while adhering to sound engineering principles during evaluation / resolution of the conditions.
Challenges conditions and decisions when needed to ensure plant systems, engineering designs, project controls and oversight of work has high technical quality, is cost effective, in compliance with established standards, codes and regulations, maintains future reliability, satisfies customer requirements, budget and schedules to meet or exceed all reasonable or agreed upon customer service levels.
5) Checks and reviews standard analysis, evaluations, and investigations of others. 6) May assume responsibility for small- to medium-scale projects which include planning, designing, scheduling and coordinating all facets of the project. 7) May provide oversight of engineering technical programs by managing the program requirements, working with cross organizational partners, reviewing and internalizing operating experience and coordinating corrective actions to ensure engineering program elements continue to remain healthy.
