About the Role
As a Data Engineer, you will help establish and deliver the Romanian data platform, creating a single source of truth to replace data currently spread across finance, reporting and local systems. The platform uses a Databricks lakehouse, dbt and Looker, with an existing UK build providing the foundation. You will be the first engineer on the ground in Romania, supported by UK data engineers at the London HQ and working closely with the Romania CFO, finance and asset management teams. The role is permanent and full-time, based on site in the Romania office, with the first month spent in London for onboarding.
The role is mid-level to senior and requires 3–5 years of commercial experience as a data or analytics engineer.
Responsibilities
- Get the Romania reporting working from day one by tying up loose ends, tracking progress and closing gaps in what has already been built.
- Own end-to-end delivery of the Romania data platform, including production pipelines, dbt models and Looker reporting on top of Charisma, the finance system, and other data sources.
- Automate manual finance reporting, including accounts receivable and overdue reporting, consolidation, property P&L and supplier reporting.
- Integrate data currently held in Excel and Power BI and support development asset cash-flow modelling across the project portfolio.
- Work directly with finance and asset management teams to understand project status and translate business needs into technical work.
- Work closely with the Romania CFO through a functional reporting line to prioritise and tackle the most significant problems first.
- Mentor the graduate engineer due to join, review their work and help establish local technical standards.
- During the first three to six months, learn the business, deploy the data platform already proven in the UK into the Romanian business and work flexibly across requirements, with no fixed initial deliverables.
- Work independently as the first and only engineer on the ground while collaborating closely with the CFO, local finance and asset teams, and UK HQ.
- Understand business priorities and where the platform adds the most value while maintaining the quality and reliability of production delivery.
- Bring structure to a fast-moving environment and help establish local technical standards.
- Proactively gather information directly from stakeholders and turn messy data and manual reporting processes into working solutions.
- Deliver to deadlines while maintaining production quality.
Requirements
- 3–5 years of commercial experience as a data or analytics engineer.
- 3+ years of advanced SQL experience.
- 2+ years of advanced experience building production dbt models. Candidates may only be considered without dbt where they have a strong substitute such as Dataform, SQLMesh or heavy SQL modelling in a comparable framework.
- 3+ years of advanced data modelling experience within a warehouse or lakehouse environment, including applicable approaches such as dimensional modelling, Kimball or Data Vault.
- 3+ years of advanced experience building and supporting production ELT/ETL pipelines, with relevant experience potentially including Fivetran, Airbyte, Azure Data Factory, Airflow or Databricks workflows.
- 2+ years of advanced stakeholder communication experience with non-technical teams, such as client-facing or embedded analytics work with finance or operations teams.
- 1+ years of proficient Databricks experience, or relevant experience with Snowflake, BigQuery, Microsoft Fabric/Synapse or Redshift.
- 1+ years of proficient Looker/LookML experience, or relevant Power BI or Tableau experience.
- 1+ years of proficient API and system integration experience, including relevant experience integrating ERP, finance or operational systems into a warehouse.
- Ability to work strongly independently while collaborating closely with finance, asset management and UK-based engineering teams.
- Candidates must have the right to work in Romania.
- Ability to work on site in the Romania office and spend the first month in London.
Nice to Have
- Previous ownership of a delivery workstream covering pipelines, models and production reporting delivered to deadlines.
- 1+ years of experience with finance data and reporting automation, including accounts receivable, consolidation, P&L or supplier reporting, or ERP data such as Charisma or similar.
- 1+ years of experience migrating Power BI or Excel reporting, or other legacy BI or spreadsheet reporting.
- 1+ years of Azure experience, with AWS or GCP as relevant alternatives.
- Mentoring or leadership appetite, including experience with code reviews, onboarding junior engineers or informal team leadership.
- Prior mentoring experience; previous people management is not required.
