Job description
Founding Design Engineer
Location: San Francisco, United States
Employment type: Full time
Location type: On-site
Department: Design & Engineering
Why we are hiring now
Radical has already served thousands of cancer patients, with an average patient rating of 9.4/10 and growing organic demand. Now we want to scale to millions and build the most loved consumer brand in healthcare.
We have developed a foundation model trained on longitudinal patient data from Mayo Clinic to predict how patients may respond to different treatments, allowing us to personalize care. This moves beyond explaining medical information toward helping answer one of the most important questions in cancer care: Which treatment is most likely to help this particular person?
But even the most advanced model only matters if its insights help people make better decisions. One of the biggest challenges in AI is turning sophisticated predictions into information people understand, trust, and can act on.
How do you present treatment options to someone who has just been diagnosed? How do you explain a prediction and its uncertainty? What makes someone trust Radical enough to use its insights in a conversation with their oncologist, and keep relying on us throughout their care?
We are hiring a founding design engineer to help answer these questions. You will shape our patient platform and the Radical brand, working directly with our founders, including Simone, our CEO, and Bryan, our CTO.
What you will own
Turn foundation model recommendations into treatment change
Translate predictions from our foundation models into second opinion reports that help patients understand what the results mean for them. Work with our technical and clinical teams to communicate treatment options, predicted response, and uncertainty through clear language and thoughtful visualizations, building trust and confidence to pursue appropriate treatment changes with their oncologist.
Build and implement the most loved consumer brand in healthcare
Build a distinctive Radical identity that combines clinical credibility with warmth and humanity, and translate it into a consistent experience across our landing pages, product, and patient touchpoints. Design, build, ship, and test rapidly to learn what earns patients’ trust and makes them love using Radical.
Build an experience patients love coming back to
Work directly with patients and the care team to understand where people feel confused, reassured, frustrated, or supported. Use those insights to improve the product continuously.
Shape the journey from connecting medical records and receiving a first opinion to eventually running their care end to end. Help patients feel that Radical understands their situation and gives them a clear next step.
Who we are looking for
You have designed and built consumer products that people love. Your work demonstrates strong visual taste, thoughtful product decisions, and the engineering ability to bring them to life.
You are likely to do well here if:
You care about building an enduring consumer brand and can translate that ambition into a distinctive product experience.
You have excellent visual and interaction design skills, with a strong sense of typography, hierarchy, layout, and motion. You can make complex information understandable without hiding important nuance.
You use AI tools fluently to prototype, code, and explore ideas.
You are comfortable owning outcomes such as activation and retention, and using data alongside design judgment.
You enjoy speaking directly with users and changing your mind when their experience challenges your assumptions.
You can take an ambiguous problem, explore different approaches, and ship a polished experience yourself.
Healthcare experience is helpful but not required. Empathy, curiosity, and a desire to work closely with cancer patients are essential.
This role may not be right for you if
You prefer to hand off designs for someone else to implement.
You care more about how a product looks than whether people understand it and continue using it.
You need a detailed brief, an established design system, or fully defined requirements before you can start.
You prefer remote work. This team works together in person in San Francisco every day.
What Radical offers
Competitive base salary.
Meaningful early stage equity.
Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
Visa and relocation support, including O-1 and H-1B support where applicable.
An Equinox membership and free meals in the office.
Quarterly company offsites. Past trips include Costa Rica and Las Vegas.
Work directly with the founders, including our CEO, on core product and brand decisions.
Our hiring process
We aim to complete the process within two weeks:
Conversation with Simone, Founder and CEO: Your motivations, the Radical mission, and what you want to build next.
Portfolio and technical conversation with Bryan, CTO: Walk us through something you personally designed and built, including your decisions, implementation, and what you learned from users.
Patient experience assignment: Explore how you would turn a complex clinical insight into an experience that builds understanding, trust, and ongoing value.
Paid working session in our San Francisco office: Work with the team on a real but self-contained product problem. We will evaluate how you think, design, build, and respond to feedback.
